Are Electric Toothbrushes Better than Manual?

Many of our Brisbane dental patients ask us, ‘Are electric toothbrushes better than manual ones?’ The truth is, the effectiveness of a toothbrush primarily depends on the brusher and their technique. Brushing regularly with the proper technique helps remove plaque and tartar build-up and keeps your gums healthy.

A study published in the Journal of Dentistry found that electric toothbrushes with rotating or oscillating heads are more effective than manual toothbrushes. However, there is no difference between non-rotating electric toothbrushes and manual toothbrushes.

Overall, the best toothbrush is the one you’re most likely to use well. Some people don’t like the vibration of powered toothbrushes, while others may find electric toothbrushes easier to clean their teeth due to their large handles and vibrating heads. For example, if a person has arthritis or limited mobility, they may prefer to use a powered toothbrush that is easier to hold and manoeuvre around their mouth.

Also, if you like the toothbrush you’re using, you may be more likely to brush for the recommended length of time, which is two minutes. Some electric toothbrushes have built-in timers to alert you when you’ve brushed for the allotted time, which has proven helpful to many of our patients.

Vigorously brushing your teeth can damage your enamel and gums. However, an electric toothbrush can help some people brush more gently while also cleaning them thoroughly.

Choosing the Best Toothbrush for Your Smile

When choosing a toothbrush, we suggest finding one with the Australian Dental Association Seal of Approval, which means it has been tested for safety and effectiveness. If you choose to use an electric toothbrush, we recommend one that has rotation oscillation, which means the bristles move in a circular motion and back and forth simultaneously. Due to the rotating head, an oscillating electric toothbrush may require less effort for the best cleaning results.

Toothbrushes with small heads are typically easier to move around in the mouth and reach the back teeth. Some electric toothbrushes have apps that inform you if you’re applying too much pressure or missing certain spots while brushing.
